Rumah Rotan is a brand that specialises in handwoven rotan (rattan) furniture
from Malaysia, in which each piece serves as a storytelling platform for village
artisans, highlighting Malaysia’s craftmanship.

Logo
The Rumah Rotan logo was physically woven using paper to reflect the brand's
dedication to handwoven rattan craftsmanship and the stories behind each piece.
By creating the logo through a hands-on process, the design embodies the
authenticity, care, and craftsmanship that define Rumah Rotan and its mission to
celebrate Malaysia's artisanal traditions.

Typography
Chakra Petch Variable Font was chosen for Rumah Rotan because its geometric structure and
clean lines create a sense of strength, clarity, and craftsmanship. Its structured forms also
complement the woven patterns and grid-based system used throughout the brand identity.

Graphic Assets
Taking inspiration from the coraks (patterns) that are typically found in rotan weaving, I combined
some of the coraks to create a pattern for Rumah Rotan.

Graphic Assets
The colour palette draws inspiration from the natural and familiar environment of the Malaysian
kampung. Together, these colours create a warm and grounded identity that celebrates
Malaysia's heritage and the artisans behind Rumah Rotan.
Grid System
The branding uses a grid system inspired by the structured patterns found in traditional weaving
techniques. Just as rattan strands are carefully arranged and interlaced within a grid to create a
corak, the same principle guides the layout of the brand identity.

Storytelling Platform
Rumah Rotan extends its brand beyond furniture through a furniture tags and book catalogue that
serve as storytelling platforms for its artisans. The catalogue showcases the heritage of rattan
weaving, the making process, and the personal journeys of the weavers, allowing customers to
connect with the cultural significance behind each piece. Similarly, each furniture tag includes
information about the artisan and the story behind the craft, transforming every product into a
meaningful narrative. Together, these touchpoints celebrate Malaysian craftsmanship, preserve
traditional knowledge, and give village artisans a voice through their work.
